The Role of the Mississippi River in Gulf of Mexico Hypoxia Oversimplifications and Confusion

چکیده
A report produced for The Fertilizer Institute by the University of Alabama entitled The Role of the Mississippi River in the Gulf of Mexico Hypoxia raises several questions about whether the large-scale oxygen depletion (hypoxia) in bottom waters of the Louisiana continental shelf is the result of anthropogenic nutrient loading from the Mississippi River, as has been reported in the scientific literature and concluded by the Gulf of Mexico Hypoxia Assessment carried out under the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources. The University of Alabama (UA) report calculates that “terrigenous (land-derived) organic carbon is likely to be an important component of the total organic matter flux” driving oxygen depletion in hypoxic zones. It also suggests that discharges of biologically available actually decreased since the 1950s. In addition, it draws inferences that hydrological changes in the river basin coupled with increased river flow may be responsible for increased hypoxia rather than just increased loadings of nutrients from fertilizers and other human sources.

Hypoxia in the Northern Gulf of Mexico: Does the Science Support the Plan to Reduce, Mitigate, and Control Hypoxia?
We update and reevaluate the scientific information on the distribution, history, and causes of continental shelf hypoxia that supports the 2001 Action Plan for Reducing, Mitigating, and Controlling Hypoxia in the Northern Gulf of Mexico (Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force 2001), incorporating data, publications, and research results produced since the 1999 integrate...
متن کاملPredicting the response of Gulf of Mexico hypoxia to variations in Mississippi River nitrogen load
The effects of nutrient loading from the Mississippi River basin on the areal extent of hypoxia in the northern Gulf of Mexico were examined using a novel application of a dissolved oxygen model for a river. The model, driven by river nitrogen load and a simple parameterization of ocean dynamics, reproduced 17 yr of observed hypoxia location and extent, subpycnocline oxygen consumption, and cro...
متن کاملCorn-based ethanol production compromises goal of reducing nitrogen export by the Mississippi River.
Corn cultivation in the United States is expected to increase to meet demand for ethanol. Nitrogen leaching from fertilized corn fields to the Mississippi-Atchafalaya River system is a primary cause of the bottom-water hypoxia that develops on the continental shelf of the northern Gulf of Mexico each summer. In this study, we combine agricultural land use scenarios with physically based models ...
متن کاملAssessing the Costs and Environmental Consequences of Agricultural Land Use Changes: A Site-Specific, Policy-Scale Modeling Approach
The growth in federal conservation programs has created a need for policy modeling frameworks capable of measuring micro-level behavioral responses and macro-level landscape changes. This paper presents an empirical model that predicts crop choices, crop rotations, and conservation tillage adoption as a function of conservation payment levels, profits, and other variables at more than 42,000 ag...
متن کاملHow climate controls the flux of nitrogen by the Mississippi River and the development of hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico
The intensification of agriculture in the central U.S. is commonly cited as the primary cause of the increase in nitrogen (N) flux by the Mississippi River since the 1950s and the development of seasonal bottom-water hypoxia in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Over the past two decades, however, agricultural land use and land cover have remained relatively constant. With high N inputs each year, cl...
